ACLS Renewal Prerequisites
To successfully enroll in the ACLS Renewal course at Willow Grove CPR, you must be proficient in recognizing critical cardiac rhythms, including VF/VT, PEA/Asystole, bradycardia, and tachycardia. Additionally, one of the following criteria must be met: you must possess an unexpired ACLS Provider Card issued by the American Heart Association or have attended a certified ACLS training class within the last four years while being an active participant or supervisor in emergency response care.
What rhythms do I need to recognize?
Before attending the ACLS Renewal Course, you should be able to confidently identify the fundamental cardiac rhythms used throughout ACLS training and testing. These include normal sinus rhythm (NSR), bradycardia, tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ventricular fibrillation (VF), ventricular tachycardia (VT), pulseless electrical activity (PEA), and asystole. Rhythm identification is considered prerequisite knowledge and is not taught during the in-person renewal session. ECG rhythm recognition also represents a significant portion of the ACLS written exam, so reviewing these rhythms before class is strongly recommended.
What are the eligibility requirements?
The ACLS Renewal Course is designed for healthcare professionals who have previously completed an ACLS Provider course and already have experience with ACLS concepts and emergency cardiovascular care. At Willow Grove CPR, you may register for the accelerated ACLS Renewal Course if you currently hold an ACLS Provider card or have completed an ACLS Provider-level certification course within the past four years. Participants should also be comfortable with basic ACLS algorithms, rhythm recognition, and their role in emergency response or resuscitation.
Can I renew my ACLS certification if my card is expired?
Yes. An expired ACLS card does not automatically require you to take the full initial ACLS Provider Course at Willow Grove CPR. If you have completed an ACLS Provider-level course within the past four years and remain familiar with ACLS concepts through your clinical role, emergency response responsibilities, or previous training, you may attend the ACLS Renewal Course. This provides experienced healthcare professionals with an efficient path to obtaining a current American Heart Association ACLS Provider certification without unnecessarily repeating the full initial course.
What if I haven't taken a class in four years?
If it has been more than four years since your last ACLS Provider-level course, you should complete the full ACLS Provider Certification Course rather than the renewal course. The full provider course allows additional time to review ACLS algorithms, cardiac rhythm interpretation, pharmacology, team dynamics, and the management of cardiovascular emergencies before completing the required skills and written evaluations. Once you have reestablished a current foundation in ACLS, future certifications can typically be completed through the ACLS Renewal Course.
Is there an online component or pre-course work?

The precourse self-assessment at our American Heart Association Training Site is not required for renewal students. You are not required to complete the precourse self-assessment.
